Liberal Democrat Councillors in Huntington and New Earswick are highlighting that work will begin on resurfacing Jockey Lane from this Sunday (15th November).
Proposals were originally put forward last year by Labour, but were ‘called-in’ by Lib Dem councillors who said that the whole road should be resurfaced rather than the short section the Labour Cabinet member agreed to originally. Amended plans passed in September mean that the road will now be resurfaced all the way between the junctions of New Lane and Kathryn Avenue.
The work, which also includes a pedestrian crossing point and a new off-road cycle path, is expected to take a week and temporary road closures will be in place. A letter to residents says that the closure of Jockey Lane will be split into two sections:
Cllr Keith Orrell, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Huntington and New Earswick, commented:
“Following the call-in from Lib Dem councillors and our repeated requests this is a greatly improved scheme. I am pleased that the whole section of the road from New Lane to Kathryn Avenue will now be resurfaced.
“However, we need a wider strategy to properly tackle congestion on Jockey Lane and in the wider Huntington area particularly as the Community Stadium is built. As part of this, we have repeatedly requested that a right-turn filter lane be put in to access The Range store and more is done to protect the residential areas around New Lane.”
