A popular path used by school children is to be resurfaced in Huntington after the project received funding from the local Ward Committee.
The path from Huntington School to Hambleton Way is used by pupils going to and from the school and residents accessing Huntington Road. Local Liberal Democrat councillors had received numerous complaints about the condition of the path and the Huntington & New Earswick Ward Committee has now decided to fund repairs.
New localised budgets were introduced by the council last summer with Ward Committees across York given an allocation of a £1 million pot to fund community projects and offer grants to local voluntary groups.
Cllr Chris Cullwick, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Huntington & New Earswick, commented:
“Liberal Democrats in the joint administration have succeeded in reversing Labour’s cuts to local budgets. The new Ward Committees now allow decisions to be made in consultation with residents.
“This is a well-used local path which urgently needs resurfacing. However, under the citywide council rules for deciding which footpaths are resurfaced it is unlikely this path would have qualified for many years, but we can now use local ward money for projects like this.
“I am looking forward to the work being completed, and would encourage other local residents and groups to get in touch with their ideas on how we can spend our 2016/17 ward funding in the coming months. For more information visit www.york.gov.uk/HuntingtonWard.”
