In a letter to The Press, Cllrs Carol Runciman, Chris Cullwick, Keith Orrell have called for a review of the chicanes on Huntington Road:
Dear Editor,
As the local ward councillors we are well aware of the problems with the chicanes on Huntington Road (The Press 18th January).
Residents have reported accidents to us since the re-instatement of the chicanes last year. We are calling on council officers to review the effectiveness of the current layout, speak to residents, and to look again at the suggestion from some local people that the chicanes should be replaced with speed bumps.
Whilst the Council says this isn’t possible – as it will slow down emergency service vehicles – local residents will know that there are speed humps just a few hundred metres further down the road outside Huntington School. If the chicanes do stay, then the signage and visibility must be improved in order to prevent further accidents.
Liberal Democrats have long called for proper widespread consultation on the chicanes, including when the Sessions development started. It was disappointing that this didn’t happen under the last Labour Council, and this work is long overdue. We hope that the current issues and recent press coverage will now lead to action.
