Liberal Democrat councillors have given their reaction to the latest transport plans for Jockey Lane in Huntington.

Proposals were originally put forward last year. The plans included a pedestrian crossing point, road surface improvements and a new off-road cycle path. Lib Dem councillors ‘called-in’ the proposals in January after criticism from local residents.

Amended plans have now been agreed by the Executive Member for Transport and Planning. However, while welcoming aspects of the revised scheme Lib Dems say the amended proposals do not go far enough.

Cllr Keith Orrell, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Huntington and New Earswick, commented:

“Following the call-in from Lib Dem councillors and our repeated requests this is a greatly improved scheme. There are positive aspects such as the commitment to improving cycling facilities and following our comments I am pleased that the whole section of the road from New Lane to Kathryn Avenue will now be resurfaced. I am also pleased that after our requests officers have confirmed that the limited use access road to the stadium off Jockey Lane will fit with the new crossing.

“Overall however the scheme is a missed opportunity to properly tackle congestion on Jockey Lane and in the wider area. We have repeatedly requested that a right-turn filter lane be put in to access The Range store. This would help ease traffic and associated air pollution and we know that the money is there for this measure. We are also concerned about the positioning of the proposed pedestrian crossing as it is away from the houses at Forge Close and Saddlers Close.”
